International Artists Records

A site I've recently worked on for the legendary 60s Texan record label International Artists Records - home of the 13th Floor Elevators and duplicated in 5 languages.

Freak Emporium Archive

The remains of the old Freak Emporium Web Site I worked with for 10 years, now a music archive.

Javascript Pacman

Just for fun, I had a go at interpreting pacman entirely in DHTML and Javascript. This is fairly old and originally ran in Netscape Communicator 4 and Internet Explorer 4. It still runs in Internet Explorer I discovered last week when I found it, so I thought id return it to the web. Just for fun..

Matt Platts - PHP/Perl Programming, Web Hosting, Microsoft Access Programming, IT Consultant

Greetings. I am a London / South East based programmer and IT consultant specialilsing in Perl, PHP, MySQL, (X)HTML and web site design, CSS and the like. I have over ten years experience in this field over full project lifecycles and some fairly large projects. I have worked Freelance, as a contractor, as a project manager and as a programmer as part of a team.

Background:
I was originally introduced to Perl whilst building the Freak Emporium web site for Delerium Records. The site was entirely self built, learining the languages as I went a long. It featured 30,000 products at its peak and sold product all over the world every day. I also created the entire ERP system this web site was but the tip of the iceberg of, using a number of technologies including Microsoft Access, Linux and Windows servers, and Visual Basic, Perl and PHP code.

Concurrently and since I have worked in a number of roles, often revolving around re-using a lot of this code as the basis for other ERP systems, portals and content management systems. Of late, a vast PHP framework has been created out of the core code which makes setting up complex dynamic websites a breeze with a small amount of training on the system. This was actually started around 1999-2000 and has turned into a bit of a monster. It would be good to release this commercially at some point, for now I seem to be in perpetual development. It automates forms and data displays from tables/queries and configuration files, produces reports in a number of formats (on screen, excel, pdf etc) and is quite simply beyond useful.

A few previous jobs:
  • E-Commerce: Custom build of Perl based e-commerce solution for a site comprising of over 30,000 products and many more customers, built around a MySQL database but also fully integrated with a Microsoft Access database. The full system is built over two servers (one windows and one linux), with secure communication channels between the two, and featured many bespoke features, including automated product ordering from suppliers at certain stock levels, a hugely accurate postage calculator via a number of services and more. Up to fifteen PCs are used to run the Microsoft Access front ends simultaneously in the client's offices, and software I have written updates the online database at regular intervals.
  • osCommerce: Modifications to nearly every part of the software. Creation of new shipping and payment modules from scratch, modifications to product listings and product details pages, further paramaters added to search facility, creation of module to allow addition of multiple products and attributes to the cart simultaneously, creation of fully manageable stock control over product attribute combinations, and more.
  • Library Software (Ms Access - web integrated): Creation of multi-terminal university library software for the University of Notre Dame, based on Microsoft Access and PHP.
  • Database / MySQL Manager: Creation of front end software to manage data in any mySQL database including search, simultaneous multiple record edit, copy/paste records etc. Also exports interfaces to view and edit data in tables into web sites and CMS systems. Essentially a PHP framework it also runs its own custom code tags for trickier operations.
  • E-Commerce: Creation of a unique php/mysql shopping cart solution that embeds into pretty much any content management system with ease! Can also be included in separate parts (eg. Main screen, category drop downs, search box etc) for full integration into existing designs, and works with the above MySQL manager.
